Which module does your BMW have?

CAS2 / CAS3 / CAS3+ (roughly 2004–2013). E-chassis cars — E90 3 Series, E60 5 Series, E70 X5 and their siblings — use the Car Access System. Keys can usually be added with a working key present, and all-keys-lost recovery is well understood, though later CAS3+ versions need the module's data read before a key can be made.

CAS4 / CAS4+ (roughly 2009–2017). F-chassis 5 and 7 Series moved to CAS4, which raised the security bar: all-keys-lost work typically means reading the module itself rather than a quick OBD session.

FEM / BDC (2012–present). The F30 3 Series, F48 X1 and most newer BMWs replaced CAS with the FEM, and current G-chassis cars — G20 3 Series, G05 X5, G30 5 Series — use the BDC. These integrate the immobilizer with the body electronics. Add a key vs. all keys lost

With one working key in hand, adding a spare is the easy version on nearly every BMW platform — the working key vouches for you, and the new key is enrolled alongside it. This is the strongest argument for cutting a spare before you need one.

All keys lost is a different animal. On CAS cars the module data must be recovered to generate a working key; on FEM and BDC cars the module goes through a read-and-restore procedure. It is slower and costs more — but it is still a same-day mobile job in most cases, and it still beats towing the car to a dealership and waiting days for a key to arrive from BMW. When the module itself is the problem

Not every "key not recognized" BMW needs a key. CAS and FEM modules fail — corrupted data after a low-voltage event, water intrusion, or simple age. The tell: every key stops working at once, or the car intermittently refuses to recognize a key that worked yesterday.
